Recognizing George Floyd & the need to love one another... Special Tribute in the Kansas House

Updated: Aug 7, 2023

Recognizing George Floyd, Rep. Barbara Ballard, also a University of Kansas Professor, and Rep. Eric Smith, also a law enforcement officer, shared some heartfelt, inspiring words to the House on May 4. Rep. Smith shared his heartbreak over the injustices that led to Mr. Floyd's life. He shared his hurt, and also his concerns that the recent aftermath in no way represents the views or behaviors of most well-intended and good officers. He made the statement "you don't know me" in an effort to share that no one really knows the hearts and motives of others. It brought to mind the important life lesson of not judging others when you "don't know them."

Rep. Ballard shared many important thoughts including the most fundamental of Christians: "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you." She shared of her heartbreak had what happened to Mr. Floyd been her own son. The loss and pain too great to bear. She shared the importance of loving one another. Rep. Ballard and Rep. Smith had our House moved to tears.

May we always be just in the House. May justice be impartial, fair, direct, and based on truth. May God heal our Land.
